The Savoy Grill
Kansas City Seafood and Steaks
219 W 9th St
Kansas City, MO 64105
(816) 842-3890

Not only have we enjoyed many meals at The Savoy, but we have spent many late night / early mornings running around the restaurant kitchen and hotel with the family that owns the hotel.  Back in the 90's when the 3am Kansas City bars would close, the owners of The Savoy would invite a select few of us back to the hotel and treat us to a nigh of gourmet cooking and hotel rooms to boot.  Those were the days!  I remember that the immense kitchen at The Savoy always reminded me of Stephen King's "The Shining" - thanks for the great times guys.

A Brief History of a Kansas City Landmark
by Valerie Lee
With Kansas City's building boom, population growth, and prosperity of the late 1800's, luxury hotels became very popular. The Hotel Savoy was built on the corner of Ninth and Central streets in 1888 by the Arbuckle Brothers of the Arbuckle Coffee Company. It offered turn-of-the-century elegance to political and stage personalities as well as cattlemen, grain merchants and travelers heading west. Architects for the building were S.E. Chamberlain and Van Brunt & Howe. The original east wing was constructed in 1888. In 1903, it was remodeled and the west wing was added along with The Savoy Grill dining room. Imported marble and tile, brass fixtures and stained glass are some of the original features of the hotel decor. Art Nouveau style stained glass in the skylight was designed in Kansas City by Frank Anderson for the hotel lobby.

At the turn of the century, The Savoy was the first hotel seen by travelers as they came from the old Union Depot. It was a luxury hotel, with a rooftop garden, ballroom, Italian tile floors, marble walls, a stained glass skylight and carved oak woodwork. During those early years, The Hotel Savoy served such celebrities as Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Marie Dressler, W.C. Fields, Will Rogers, Lillian Russell, Sara Bernhardt, and John D. Rockefeller.

In 1903, The Savoy Grill dining room opened, with an exclusive Men's Grill that did not serve women. That restriction was soon changed. In the early years, The Savoy's clientele dined on such delicacies as prairie chicken and buffalo steak. After the dinner hour, tables were pushed aside for music and dancing late into the evening.

Over the years, The Hotel Savoy's most enduring feature has been The Savoy Grill restaurant. Dating from 1903, it is the oldest restaurant in Kansas City, with stained glass windows, high beamed ceilings, lanterns that were once gaslights, and an enormous carved oak bar. Booth No. 4, known as the presidents' booth, has been host to Warren Harding, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.

The original Grill Room is surrounded by The Savoy Murals, painted by Edward Holslag in 1903 when he was in his early thirties. Those murals depict the pioneers' departure from Westport Landing and their journey along the Santa Fe Trail. Holslag, who was a pupil of The National Academy of Design and John LaFarge, is represented at the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. The Savoy Grill Murals have been included in the Smithsonian Institution's "Bicentennial Inventory of American Paintings."

The Hotel Savoy and its well-known dining room enjoyed the fruits of Kansas City's buisness boom through the late 1890's and into the turn of the century. With the depression era of the 1930's, and later the trend toward suburban living, came hard times for The Savoy. The hotel was in a serious decline by 1960 when Don Lee, a 27 year old member of a vetern restaurant family, purchased The Savoy Grill restaurant. In 1965, Lee became convinced that The Hotel Savoy had economic potential and purchased it from Jack Fox, an investor and member of a family active in the downtown garment industry. When Lee bought the hotel, in part to safeguard his restaurant lease, The Savoy was in bad condition. It was using only approximately 80 of its 200 rooms, mostly for transient guests.

By the 1970's, The Savoy Grill was experiencing good business and The Hotel Savoy had become a residential hotel. On December 30, 1974, The Hotel Savoy and The Savoy Grill were entered in the National Register of Historic Places, indicating that The Savoy was considered worthy of preservation. In the mid 1980's, the area along Ninth Street was revived. Investors began developing older buildings into residential and entertainment centers.

In 1985, Don Lee began renovating The Hotel Savoy, turning existing rooms into luxurious Bed and Breakfast suites. Each room is finished in Victorian turn-of-the-century style, uniquely decorated and filled with antiques from within the hotel. Because of The Savoy's historical appeal, recent movies such as "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge" and "Cross of Fire" have filmed scenes here.

During renovation of the hotel, old letters and artifacts have been found. These items narrate The Savoy's legacy. For example, a paper decribed how the famed magician, Harry Houdini, was locked in a Savoy phone booth by a clever traveling salesman. A 1938 recording of "Stompin' at the Savoy," by Bennie Goodman and Count Basie, was located and now hangs in The Savoy's Bed and Breakfast dining room. Letters from the Prohibition era were found. The Savoy, being in Missouri, helped people who wanted liquor in Kansas. A letter from a Kansas real estate, loan and insurance man read: "Kindly send me the good stuff. I am laying in a little supply before the (national) bone dry law goes into effect." The Savoy shipped him four quarts of Sherwood Rye.

The Hotel Savoy's Bed and Breakfast suites are receiving good response from Kansas Citians as well as world travelers, offering encouragement that other historic hotels may have a secure future.

McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant History
from Mccormick and Schmick's Official Website at www.mccormickandschmicks.com ...
McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Kansas City
Since teaming up in the early 1970s, Bill McCormick and Doug Schmick have established more than 50 restaurants and catering operations throughout the country - an extraordinary feat in a business with the highest attrition rate of any in the United States. The two men, very different yet surprisingly compatible, have established themselves as entrepreneurs with one collective vision, to run the nation's premier family of seafood restaurants.
McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Kansas City
The history of McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants began when Bill McCormick purchased Jake's Famous Crawfish Restaurant located in Portland, Ore., and brought the more than 100-year-old landmark back to life.
McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Kansas City
When asked the secret of how he revitalized a restaurant on the brink of closing, McCormick says, "I like nothing better than being a good host." In addition to his spirited personality, McCormick has an ability to bring out the best in other's managerial skills and strengths, a combination essential in a successful business.
McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Kansas City
Part of the managerial talent McCormick tapped was Doug Schmick, a management trainee. The two formed a partnership in 1974, creating Traditional Concepts, a precursor to today's McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants. In 1979, they opened the original McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant in Portland, Ore. Since that time, the company has expanded to more than 50 restaurants across the country.

"Establishing a restaurant and running it well requires the creative imagination and stamina that go into producing a Broadway play," says Doug Schmick. "Over the years, the hardest thing conceptually has been to change with the times and remain a force in the industry without straying from what has made this company so successful in the first place."

Making it work are the company's leaders and more than 5,000 employees.
McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant Kansas City
The combination of an open imagination and a respect for tradition are what makes McCormick & Schmick's the classic and successful business that it is today.

Each McCormick & Schmick's restaurant is uniquely designed to create an inviting, original and relaxed atmosphere. There is not a corporate blueprint for restaurant architecture; rather each property dictates the layout. Whether overlooking the water, under a wheelhouse chandelier or with original artwork found in a more than 100-year-old dining room, each restaurant has its own style and ambiance.

Site Specific Designs
Ask to see the "company blueprint" for a McCormick & Schmick's restaurant, and you had better clear some room on your desk for more than 50 very different designs. No two restaurants are the same in size, layout or personality. Each restaurant is uniquely designed to reflect the culture and heritage of the city in which it is located.

Historical Relevance
Many McCormick & Schmick's restaurants are located in buildings included on the National Register of Historic Places. For example, Spenger's Fish Grotto in Berkeley, Calif., is in its original building from the early 1900's. One of the Boston restaurants is located in historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

Regional Personality
Touring the restaurants one might find themed rooms such as the Kennedy room located at the Fanueil Hall restaurant in Boston; local sports logos in exquisite glass-workings; or wood species indigenous to the region.

Artwork and Photos
Significant effort is spent to find the proper artwork and photos that give the finishing touches to each restaurant. Countless hours are exhausted finding turn of the century Harper's Weekly photos or procuring artwork to theme a room.

Traditional Mixology
There was a time when bartenders practiced the art of traditional mixology, crafting drinks with more concern for the guest's experience than the speed in which the drink was made. This timeless art of mixology is still alive at McCormick & Schmick's restaurants.

Sunset Grill Seafood and Steaks

For those living in North Kansas City, Downtown or Midtown, the drive to 145th and Metcalf can feel like a voyage to a foreign land. At least Sunset Grill is doing its part to ensure that South Johnson County feels as tropical as its incrementally smaller latitude. The theme is Caribbean, Pacific, Californian, Mexican and, oddly enough, Italian -- pretty much any setting of beautiful sunsets. Though many of the dishes are named for tropical surroundings, preparations like the Sunset Strip illustrate a new brand of fusion: Italibbean. Sitting atop garlic mashed potatoes and roasted vegetables, the strip steak is grilled and topped with gorgonzola cheese. The Chopped Sunset Salad also features gorgonzola, as well as grilled chicken, prosciutto, Roma tomatoes and shaved Parmesan cheese. The Cocomo Shrimp more accurately match the tropical theme: coconut-battered shrimp, deep-fried and served with fresh pineapple sauce. The atmosphere, unlike some of the food, is tropically festive, with palms, ferns and a tropically themed soundtrack. The Sunset Grill is certainly eclectic, though only time will tell whether Italian/Caribbean fusion will succeed in the tropical stretches of southern suburbia. -- Jeff Akin

From Sunset Grill's Official Website at www.sunsetgrillrestaurant.com

Owners: Dan Tierney and Rod Lampe have over 40 years combined restaurant experience. Together they shared the passion and desire to create a unique, yet casual dining experience. The idea of Sunset Grill was a long time dream of both Dan and Rod. Working around the clock to come up with a restaurant concept that was different than any chain, was not an easy task.

Together with the help of their wives, a fabulous Caribbean/American food and drink menu was created. While the menu was being perfected, construction was started with friend and foreman Dan Larsen overseeing all aspects of the crew, design plans, and code specifications. Once the inside was complete, artist Jen Bertrand was brought in to design a Caribbean feel throughout the Sunset Grill. Starting with the large canvases along the back wall, the white-walled restaurant was transformed into "your place of paradise"!

November 11, 2004, Dan and Rod invited family and friends, supporters and vendors alike to celebrate the grand opening of Sunset Grill. The evening was a delicious hit and their business has been growing ever since. It is their daily desire that you enjoy your dining experience in all aspects from atmosphere, food, and service. Sunset Grill strives to be a local favorite for years to come!

From The Pitch Magazine

You know the name Sunset Grill. You've heard those words for as long as you can remember, including in that 1984 song by Don Henley, inspired by Joe Frolich's not-very-glamorous burger joint on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. There's the low-budget 1993 movie of the same name starring Peter Weller as a sleazy detective — not to be confused with a soft-core porno called Adventures of D.P. Boys 1: Down at Sunset Grill, filmed the following year.

An Internet search turns up actual Sunset Grills or Sunset Grilles all over the United States, in Tennessee, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania. Some are no-frills beer joints, at least two are upscale hotel restaurants, and one's a golf-course snack shop in Michigan. The Sunset Grill & Tap in Boston serves nearly 100 brands of beer. The Sunset Grill in the Hilton Maldives Resort is built on stilts over a coral reef.

And then there's the Sunset Grill in Overland Park, which is not, I'm sorry to say, built on stilts overlooking an azure sea. The view from its big windows is a blacktop parking lot. Inside, the ambience is pretend-tropical, in the same way that listening to a Jimmy Buffett album while sipping a Blue Whale cocktail feels tropical. But even a faux beachfront shack is a lot more interesting than a lot of the chain restaurants in this corner of Overland Park. And if this independently owned Sunset Grill has a lot more in common with a traditional neighborhood grill than a dining room at a seaside resort, that's not a bad thing. Johnson County's sprawling suburbs could use a few more friendly hangouts like this one, the creation of owners Rod Lampe and Dan Tierney, who — surprise! — took their establishment's name from the Don Henley song (which doesn't have a damn thing to do with food).

Henley does invite his listeners to "watch the working girls go by" — a visual that's unimaginable at 145th Street and Metcalf unless the working girl is a crisply dressed corporate executive driving her Lexus to the Stein Mart around the corner.

I brought a high-powered interior designer, Carol Ann, with me on one of my four visits to the Sunset Grill. She's a very busy working gal who rarely ventures south of 119th Street — though the promise of a pre-supper spin through that Stein Mart sold her on the date. After an ever-so-brief shopping expedition, we did the suburban thing and got back in the car to drive the two blocks to the restaurant. Walk? Maybe if there had been a beach.

Lampe and Tierney have done a pretty good job of creating a coastal ambience on a limited budget. They've split the dining room with an array of tropical plants and a bubbling fountain; Casablanca-style fans slowly revolve overhead. They've left the floor concrete and upholstered the booths in synthetic burlap.

"It's cute," Carol Ann said. "And very much aimed at a family crowd," she noted, looking at a nice young couple with two well-behaved adolescents sitting nearby.

Baby boomers, too. Several months ago, on my first visit, I cringed when the young guitarist performing in the lounge launched into Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and followed it up with America's "Horse With No Name."

"I know what you're thinking," Carol said that night. "There's kind of a 1970s feel to this restaurant."

Her words rang particularly true when I opened the menu and saw some interesting similarities between it and the Houlihan's menu from that bygone era. Back in the '70s, Houlihan's featured different kinds of burgers and salads, imaginative soups, a couple of steak options and festive cocktails. Similarly, the Sunset Grill tries to put an equatorial spin on almost everything — sometimes with tasty results but not always.

Instead of the ubiquitous spinach-artichoke dip, for example, the Sunset Grill serves jalapeño-artichoke dip, though the primary ingredient seems to be cream cheese. It's an addictive, creamy concoction that's smooth at first bite but packs an unexpected wallop. And instead of serving "Tuxedo Shrimp," Lampe and Tierney call their version Texas shrimp because they stuff the bacon-wrapped crustaceans with jalapeños.

Perhaps a hot pepper or two might have helped the crummy crab cakes, which were doughy and soggy. "A waste of perfectly good lump crab," Carol Ann sniffed, pushing the plate away. Things went from bad to worse for her. Now, Carol Ann is a snob about many things but not food. That didn't stop her from sending back her thick slab of grilled tuna steak, topped with a jalapeño-citrus salsa, twice because it was too pink in the center. The staff was accommodating, but she never warmed up to the meal. "I should have ordered the salmon," she said.

I made a much wiser choice with the Baja shrimp tacos: soft flour tortillas stuffed with garlic-sautéed shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers and, oddly enough, Parmesan cheese. They were sided with a weird but surprisingly satisfying "Island Slaw," which wasn't so much about chopped cabbage as Ramen noodles in a sweet vinaigrette.

Waiters and waitresses here are young, attractive and peppy; they actually seemed to have been trained in the art of attentive service. "It's a fun place to work," one of the waitresses confessed to me, "because the owners are very hands-on and care about details."

I know that's true because on all of my visits, I saw one or both of the owners working — really hustling — which is an increasingly rare sight in today's restaurant scene. In fact, when I returned with Franklin and Richard on a Sunday night, the whole staff was hopping. "Is this place ever not busy?" I asked our server. "Oh, sure," she said. "It slows down a bit after 9 p.m. This is Johnson County, you know."

Yeah, I didn't quite think we were in the Caribbean — or Hawaii, even though I'd ordered a Maui burger. The beef patty topped with prosciutto, Monterey Jack and grilled pineapple was an odd multicultural combination but damned good. I kept the 50th-state theme going with a bowl of Volcanic pasta: fettuccine in a "beach fire sauce" (kind of Alfredo meets the cayenne shaker) that I liked a lot more than I thought I would.
Baja shrimp tacos $10.75

"You're clearly losing your mind," said Franklin, who stuck to a more traditional fettuccine in Alfredo sauce. Richard, however, was adventurous and ordered the tortilla chicken. Unfortunately, it wasn't very spicy, despite a blanket of beach fire sauce. The stuff was only as tropical as a spoonful of pico de gallo and fried tortilla strips would allow. Johnson Countians can take only so much spice, after all.

Desserts here are as American as an excellent apple crisp (served à la mode) and a respectable Key lime pie that actually looks and tastes like the silky cream pie you would find in the Florida Keys. Those who prefer something more exotic can order a rum, Midori and pineapple juice cocktail called a Witchy Woman.

It's also named after a Don Henley song.

The Capital Grille Reviews

2005 Fall Dining Guide

By Tom Sietsema
Sunday, October 16, 2005

** and 1/2 (out of four stars)

Take a cue from the restaurant's show window of dry-aging beef and pick a cut from within: If there's a better sirloin or porterhouse in town, I have yet to slice into it. The Capital Grille is as manly a steakhouse as you can picture, from the dark wood to the stuffed animal heads to side dishes that arrive in small barges (nutmeg-laced creamed spinach) or as edible mountains (four hungry customers merely put a dent in a voluminous plate of onion strings and cottage fries). Still, it's a civilized oasis, where steaming, jasmine-scented towels are sometimes brought between courses. To start, there are a bold French onion soup and, unfortunately, bland crab and lobster cakes; to close, consider the decadent flourless chocolate espresso cake or the dreamy coconut cream pie. From beginning to "check, please," the Capital Grille is a meat market with great appeal.

This is a Must

Had reservations for Saturday night at 7:30pm. The moment we entered the restaurant everyone was exceptional. You must try Calamari it was to die for. Pam waitress was attentive and always available. My husband ordered 20oz Porterhouse and loved the flavor as well as the way it was prepared. James the manager visited two times to see how things were going. Cheesecake was delicious and atmosphere was wonderful. We will go back again and again. I ordered the Oscar Fillet 10oz and couldn't finish it. The bread is varied and served quickly. I would recommend this to everyone local and out of town.

From Bonefish Grill Official website at www.bonefishgrill.com

Fueled by their mutual passion for fish, veteran restaurateurs Tim Curci and Chris Parker set out to create a new kind of dining experience. They wanted to build a place that would take the mystery out of fish for people who didn't eat it very often. They would help their guests understand where the fish they were eating came from, how to have it cooked, and best of all – how to have fun with the wide range of delicious flavors and sauces they would develop to perfectly complement a wide range of species.

They wanted the place to feel warm, comfortable and inviting inside, but below the surface would lie a dogged commitment to quality and excellence on every level. They would come to call this ambiance "polished casual".

They wanted to provide their guests with the freshest fish possible, so in their search to find fish from the waters worldwide, they hunted down and located fish purveyors with the same commitment to quality as theirs. Using extraordinary thought and care, Chris and Tim designed a ritual where they would receive, inspect, and hand cut the fish daily.

On January 15, 2000 in St. Petersburg, Florida, the first Bonefish Grill was born. People turned out in droves! The success of their vision has generated restaurant growth that has taken them throughout the Southeast and Northeastern coasts, and today Bonefish Grill has begun expanding throughout the Midwest.

Pacific Grill
Kansas City Seafood and Steaks
6101 E 63rd St
Kansas City, MO 64133
Phone: 816-587-4745

For 28 years, Ivy's restaurant was the fine-dining stalwart of the Northland. One day the owners, tired of renovations and expansions, decided they wanted to start over and design and build their dream restaurant. They realized that dream when they opened the Pacific Grill in the Tuileries Plaza. The new digs are sleek and sophisticated, marrying hardwood, stone and polished fixtures into a bright, airy space. Pacific Grill offers lunch and dinner during the week, adding breakfast to the mix on weekends. The menu is internationally influenced, but relies more on high-quality ingredients than any one culinary theme. Seared ahi tuna is found in several different incarnations, including a sweet and spicy tuna tartare. Wood-fired pizzas are of the gourmet variety, offering duck confit, goat cheese and roasted red peppers as ingredients. From French to Italian to Midwestern favorites, the dinner menu is carefully considered and well balanced. Veal saltimboca, cod lyonnaise and bacon-wrapped meatloaf illustrate just a fraction of the menu's breadth. Pacific Grill now also boasts one of the Northland's best bar scenes, offering daily happy hours and a separate bar menu. Many are disappointed that Ivy's closed, but that's just because they haven't been to Pacific Grill yet. -- Jeff Akin (Photo: Jeff Akin)

Moby's Fish Tales - Harrah's Casino Restaurant
Kansas City Seafood Restaurant
Harrah’s Casino, One Riverboat Drive
Kansas City, MO  64116
816-472-7777

At Moby's Fish Tales you'll experience the freshest seafood in Kansas City. Enjoy exquisite seafood dishes like live Maine lobster and Alaskan king crab.  Not only will you love the food at Moby's, you'll love the atmosphere. The walls are covered with local fish stories and pictures of the big catch. Bring in your fish story and you could become a part of the legend.

The portions are definitely Moby-sized at this lively, dinner-only seafood house at Harrah’s casino. Even the oversized crustaceans in the shrimp cocktail are brawnier than the usual jumbo variety. The dining room isn’t fancy, but some of the dishes are more sophisticated than you might expect, including a citrus-grilled lobster tail and a fine filet mignon.
